I sat down one night with the idea that I'd like to write a song about funny things I remember about being a kid. What was fun... like playing in a pile of dirt. I could do it for hours. I was always filthy... and my Mother would hose me off in the front yard (I don't remember her doing this in winter). I wanted the song to be rough house, fun and jumpy... something you would might make as a kid. It's rough anyway...

Playing In A Pile Of Dirt

© Mark Betcher

I’m playing in a pile of dirt
I’m playing in a pile of dirt
I’m playing in a pile of dirt today.
I’m playing in a pile of dirt
Don’t know nothin’ bout button down shirts
I’m playing in a pile of dirt today.

Just escaped from my baby bed
I ate a worm and I’m not dead
I pooped my pants just the other day
I wonder how high is the sky
Tiger lilies taste good I don’t know why
And penny candy don’t cause me tooth decay

Comic books with X Ray Specs
Cap sent old Red Skull to heck
Meat loaf dinners served in a silver TV tray
Lumpy girls in a playboy
Cheap horror movies rubber monsters toys
Slick meat on white beard don’t decay

Salted snails are no fun
Shot out a neighbor’s window with an BB gun
I point to wax lips in the penny candy display
I built a fort with old yeller boards
Hit my brother in the head with a plastic sword
Smoke a cigarette from Mom’s ash tray
